Can the design of glove dispensing boxes influence glove contamination?

The study focuses on the comparison between two types of glove packaging systems in healthcare spaces: the conventional system and a new system in which gloves are dispensed individually and vertically by the handle. The objective was to evaluate whether the new system has lower levels of microbial contamination both on the gloves and on the surface around the box opening.

Key Study Results:

  1. Surface Contamination Near the Opening:
    • Surfaces near the opening of vertical dispensing boxes became significantly less contaminated over time compared to conventional boxes (P<0.001).
    • On average, contamination around the handle of vertical dispensing boxes was 46.7% lower than in conventional boxes.
  2. Contamination of gloves:
    • Gloves dispensed from vertical dispensing boxes showed significantly less contamination than gloves from conventional boxes (P<0.001).
    • After six weeks, the gloves in the vertical dispensing After six weeks, the gloves in the vertical dispensing boxes had 88.9% less bacterial contamination compared to gloves in conventional boxes.

Conclusions of the study:

  • Contamination Reduction: Improved glove box design significantly reduces glove contamination.
  • Risk of Cross Contamination: These modifications reduce the risk of cross contamination in sanitary spaces.
  • Complement to Good Practices: Although this modification is very positive for hospitals, it does not replace the need for strict compliance with hand hygiene practices and the proper use of non-sterile gloves.
