Why cover the side table?

When not in use, cover instrument tables to reduce the bacterial load under the
cover and help protect the instrument table from contamination.

According to AORN guidelines for perioperative practice, the sterile field should be covered when not in use or during periods of increased activity, such as prior to incision or patient repositioning.

They also add:

“When sterile fields are covered, they should be covered in a manner that allows the cover to be removed without taking the part of the cover that falls below the sterile field with it over the sterile field.”
