Study on Bacterial Contamination of Medical Gloves: Risk of Indirect Transmission in Healthcare Environments

A recent study on bacterial contamination in gloves has revealed worrying results that highlight the risk of bacterial transmission in healthcare settings. The research identified that contaminated gloves can act as a mechanism for indirect transmission of bacteria from the hands of healthcare professionals to patients. This finding is crucial to better understand how bacterial contamination can affect patient safety and how hygiene and protective practices should be improved.

The results showed that identical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were recovered from both contaminated gloves and clinical cultures from a patient with an invasive infection. This finding suggests that used gloves may be a significant source of bacterial transmission between healthcare workers and patients. In fact, in this study, bacteria were detected in 75% of the gloves tested.

A key observation of the study is that bacteria predominated on normal skin and respiratory tract flora, which reinforces the idea that contamination comes from the hands of healthcare workers. However, it is important to note that gloves from a freshly opened box showed no contamination, indicating that contamination occurs after the box is opened, probably due to repeated hand contact with the gloves and box.

The study also provided key data on the average bioburden on gloves, which was 1.7 cfu/glove. These results are in line with previous research, such as that of Rossoff and colleagues, who reported a 55% contamination of gloves in an intensive care unit, primarily with skin contaminants, and an average bioburden of 1.8.
